  Ajith Kumar  (born May 1, 1971) is leading Tamil film actor and Indian Formula Three car racer, who has acted in many Tamil, Telugu and Hindi movies. Ajith Kumar made his acting debut in his only Telugu-language film-to-date, Prema Pustagam in 1992, which was followed by a Tamil film Amaravathi in which he acted his first lead role. After acting in a series of low-budget films, Ajith got recognition for his performance in Aasai and as an anonymous lover in Kadhal Kottai.

Ajith received his first Filmfare Best Actor Award (Tamil) for his performance in Vaali in 1999, portraying a double-role. He won this award again for two consecutive years — in the 2001 film Citizen, in which he appeared in nine different appearances, and in the 2002 film, Villain, playing twins, one of which had a disability. He was later recognized for his triple role in Varalaru, one of his hit releases to date. He was recognized for his more sensitive character portrayal in Kireedam. Later in 2007 Billa released with the huge expectations was a Biggest Blockbuster at Box-office recorded second Tamil Film of 2007 by Highest Collection in India and OverSeas.

AjithKumar is also a professional race driver, having driven in Formula Three for a season. He is also an ambassador for the Green Revolution.

 

Early life

  Ajith Kumar was born as the middle child in Hyderabad [disambiguation needed], India to a Tamil Father and a Sindhi mother.He dropped out of Asan Memorial Senior Secondary School in 1986 to become a full-time garment exporter based in Erode till 1990. Several business agencies pushed him into modelling for advertisements in print media.

Acting career

Romantic hero (1992-2000)

Ajith started his film career at the age of 21 as an actor in the Telugu movie Prema Pustakam in 1992 with best new face award .but now he is the hearthrobe of many tamil fans and shortly called as thala. [His next film was a superhit Tamil film Amaravathi. second Tamil film Pavithra was delayed for 17 months because of a racing injury that left him bed-ridden. Both films received vast appreciation from tamil audience.[ It was his third Tamil film that released 10 months later in 1995, Aasai, directed by Vasanth and produced by Mani Rathnam which helped him tp establish his career as a young dream actor in Kollywood.Ajith's first big budget venture was Aasai a BlockBuster until the release of Agathiyan's National Award winning Kadhal Kottai. which established him as an youth Icon of Kollywood. Ajith later played the lead in Amitabh Bachchan's debut Tamil production Ullasam. This venture paid him a salary of over Rs. 1 million for the first time ever.

A string of much successful movies followed, Kadhal Mannan in 1998 which is directed by saran given him big break was a super hit at Box-office, and league of success followed on Aval Varuvala,Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen were Super-Hits

In 1999 Unnai Thedi Directd by SundarC was a BlockBuster at Box-Office, then comes the real tun arround for Ajith is Vaali which cast him alongside Simran. Vaali saw a new peak in Ajith's career. He played a dual role in the film. Vaali was a Biggest BlockBuster, The Movie Ran for 270 Days with packed houses and established Ajith as a undoubtful young SuperStar after Rajinikanth. In this Ajith acted One as a deaf-and-dumb twin who lusts after his naive brother's wife After Amarkalam which sets new trend in Tamil Cinema and cemented Ajith as a Superstar Action Hero with his then-fiancee, now wife Shalini, Anandha Poongatre the next was also a super Hit at the Box-office. Ajith set up his own distribution company AK International with the office located within the premises of NIC Arts which was run by his ex-friend, producer and distributor S. S. Chakravarthi. This office was shifted in 2006.

In 2000, Ajith started with Mugavari acted alongside Jyothika Saravanan. the Movie was criticaly aclaimed and was a complete family entertainer with avesome performance from Ajith as a emerging Music composer. The movie was a super hit at the Box-Office, but the Team expectd big success due to quality of performance and technical exelance in the movie. Then Ajith cast alongside Mammooty, Abbas, Tabu and Aishwarya Rai in Kandukondain Kandukondain was a musical Hit, but the film doesn't meet the expectation of audience and was just above average at Box-office.

Ups and downs (2001-2005)

In 2001 ,Ajith began the year with the scintillating movie Dheena directed by A. R. Murugadoss appealed him as Mass Action Hero in hearts of Tamil People. This movie showed Ajith as a rowdy and he acted alongside Suresh Gopi and Laila Mehdin. This movie is a super hit at box office. Followed by Citizen opposite Vasundhara Das was experimentally successful and earned the actor with lot of appreciation and awards, the movie marked it's signature as another Super Hit in box office, Citizen was followed by Poovellam Un Vaasam which was an above average grosser. Ajith played the role of Shahrukh Khan's brother in the commercially unsuccessful historical film Asoka. In 2002 he started with The action flick Red  appealed him with rural and Class 'C' masses, but the movie failed with big fan base on Elite Class was an above average grossor and followe by the film Raja opposite Jyothika Saravanan marked the downfall was a big dissappointment and he jumped back with the Blockbuster Movie Villain with KS Ravikumar in League. In 2003 Ajith acted in Anjaneya and Jana opposite Meera Jasmine and Sneha both flopped at box office, In 2004 Attagasam with Pooja Umashankar became an hit. In 2005, he went on to act in the film Ji which was another major failure. Even though there was ups and downs in his cinema career, Ajith occupies an admirable position in the hearts of all his fans and to the general public and he has one of the asia's "the best" fan base and those fans give him a grand opening and in special they treat him well in south tamilnadu.even his audio releases are celebrated as major festivals in cities like madurai,tirunelveli,trichy..etc

Billa and the future (2006-present)

During 2006, Ajith acted in 3 projects. First he acted in Paramasivan directed P. Vasu was a Hit at the Box office for Pongal and then for Tamil New Year Thirupathi directed by Perarasu was below average at the Box-Office and appealed only to rural Masses. Later that year he released his 3 year-pending project Varalaru: History of Godfather directed by K. S. Ravikumar. Varalaru turned out to be a Blockbuster movie in terms of collection due to the three roles he played as an old man who was once a classical dancer and two identical twins, with one being the antagonist.

Ajith's first film in 2007 was with the newcomer director Chella in his maiden film entitled Aalwar. Aalwar was a failure movie and did not live up to the expectations created by the success of Varalaru. Then Ajith acted in a remake of a 1989 National Film Award winning Malayalam film, Kireedam with Trisha Krishnan. The film was produced by Adlabs and marked the production company's entry into Kollywood. With a few controversies regarding the film's immensely emotional climax, the film was the above average at the Box office. Ajith, however, sustained a recurring spinal injury on the sets of the film.

On December 14, 2007 Billa released with the huge expectations since it was the remake of Rajinikanth's 1980 Tamil film Billa which itself was a remake of Amitabh Bachan's 1978 Hindi film Don which in turn was remade by Shah Rukh Khan in 2006 as Don again. The movie was a Big Blockbuster at the Box-office recorded second Tamil Film of 2007 by Highest Collection in India and OverSeas. Billa was the stylish Tamil Movie in Bond Style got good reviews from both critics as well as Masses and announced Ajith - the SuperStar is Back.

Post Billa Ajith acted in a movie called Aegan which released on Diwali 25th October 2008 was turned out to be a good film after billa.It was a remake of the shah rukh khan film "mein hoon na" and got good response from crowd .

Ajith will next be casted in the film Asal with Shivaji Films and is set to start shooting which is directed by saran. A lot is expected of this movie because of Ajith-Saran combo which has already done 3 films and all three became blockbusters.

Personal life

 

Ajith began dating his Amarkalam co-star Shalini in 1999 . At that time, their involvement made him a regular subject of tabloid gossip, a role to which he was unaccustomed. They were married in 2000 in Chennai, where they invited many other Kollywood actors and actresses including Rajnikanth, Kamal Haasan, Joseph Vijay, Surya Sivakumar and R. Madhavan. As both were of different religions, Ajith being a Hindu and Shalini being Catholic, they were married together under the customs of both religions . After their marriage in the year 2000, Shalini retired as an actress and became a full time housewife. However she did accompany Ajith to the sets of his films as moral support. On January 3, 2008, the couple were blessed with a baby girl, Anoushka Kumar.

Professional car racer

Ajith is a professional "car racer" and has driven in circuits around India in places such as Mumbai , Chennai and Delhi. He has also been abroad for various races including Germany and Malaysia. He drove in the Formula 3 for the team Mango Racing.

He was in 2004, India’s third best driver after Narain Karthikeyan and Karun Chandok.

 The Green Revolution, Chennai

Ajith is an ambassador for the Green Revolution, an organization to clean up the Chennai environment. He uses his films for subtle marketing of his ideas and planted 101 saplings in his locality in Adyar, Chennai in 2004. This was to make an awareness about the environment and to increase the oxygen levels in Chennai due to the pollution caused by everyday motorists. This action was welcomed by the public. Since then the Green Revolution themselves have went on to plant many saplings in other parts of Tamil Nadu.
